Detail /// /// Artist Kristaps Ģelzis. Sparky as gunpowder. A deepwater thinker. My Dad. Since obtaining his degree in graphic art, he has worked in various artistic media – graphic art, video installations, installations, objects, sculpture, environmental art, digital prints, drawing and watercolour. He's also been involved in book illustration, scenography and exhibition design. He spent a decade in the advertising business, in the art director's chair, where he sits no longer, preferring to devote himself fully to a life in art. A curriculum vitae generally only includes the results achieved, but a whole bunch of additional pieces of the puzzle are useful, if we are to sketch the course of his life in full: sunny childhood summer's at Saulkrasti, violin-playing at music school, the sewing skills learned in his student days, how he cut his finger when creating the 'Virtuale' exhibition, his collection of McDonald's toys and his psychedelic exhaustion from painting in luminescent colours by the light of neon lamps. Put the pieces together, step back and take a look at what you've got.

Detail /// /// The book „The Photograph as Art in Latvia” by art historian Alise Tīfentāle is the first contemporary study about the recent past of Latvian photographic art. 1960s is a magical decade in Western culture and Latvia as well. Being artificially separated from Western and global information space by the Soviet regime Latvian culture and art nevertheless was looking for and found the way to be in contact and interact with this space. During the 1960s those were photographers who succeeded in attaining what was forbidden (or limited) for representatives of other arts – they joined international exhibition activities and developed West-oriented, modern aesthetics and system of artistic imagery based on western history of art The book gives an insight into the most significant stylistic trends and means of expression of form characteristic of the Latvian photographic art of the 1960s, which constitutes the part of the 20th century Latvian visual art heritage that has not been sufficiently studied until now. The author has analysed works of photographic art by Latvian authors created between 1960 and 1969 that were exhibited in Latvian, USSR and international exhibitions of camera clubs and photographic salons and were reproduced in press or photography albums and catalogues. Text in Latvian and English.

Detail /// /// The work of photographer Egons Spuris stands out not only as the great achievement of Latvian photography of his time but also as an outstanding example of realism in the second half of the 20th century international visual art. The photography historian Pamela Brown states that “Spuris’ coherent body of work is steeped in modernist tendencies. These range from: the aesthetic explorations of of Neue Sachlichkeit of the Weimar Republic . to Hungarian André Kertész’ compositions, remarkable vantage points and unorthodox camera angles .. American Walker Evans’ subjective documentary style and American Ralph Eugene Meatyard’s ephemeral and contemplative photography of the 1960s to name just few. What makes Spuris so exceptional is that in the midst of Soviet isolationism he employs and practices a mode and vernacular of photography that, in my opinion, ranks equal with recognised international photographers who have secured their place within the history of photography.” The album of Egons Spuris’ photographs (compiled by photographer Andrejs Grants) includes two theoretical essays – by Professor Eduards Kļaviņš and art historian Pamela Brown. It is a concise and at the same time comprehensive view on the master’s oeuvre which defines his place in theLatvian culture and the world photography context. Text in Latvian and English.

Detail The book by art historian Ināra Appena is the first comprehensive study about the sculptor August Volz who adorned the city of Riga with sculpted ornaments during the period when urban construction was flourishing in Latvia and when the richness of architectural and artistic expression culminated in Historicism and Art Nouveau. The book consists of two parts: the first giving an account of the artist’s private life and public activities, beginning from the late 19th century Germany till early 20th century Latvia, based mainly on the memoirs of the architect August Volz, Junior, the sculptor’s son, and those written by the artist himself. The second part is looking at the heritage of works by this sculptor mainly in Riga, including the historical development of August Volz’s sculpture and stone carving company and descriptions of sculpted adornments of buildings as well as sculptures in parks and streets of Riga and elsewhere. The book is richly illustrated with documentary photographs from archives of the Volz family and Latvian State archives as well as photos of August Volz’s works in the contemporary city space of Riga. Text in Latvian and English.
